Journey – March 2018

In light of the most recent school shooting in Florida I am reminded about why Missional Communities are so important. Everyday we come in contact with people everywhere we go. As Christians we are called by the Great Commission to shine the light of the Gospel of Christ as we go throughout our life. As we go to work and school, how are we shining the light of
Jesus to those around us? How are we connecting with the outcast, the bullied, those all alone and those who seem angry? We so often shy away from people who are different than us or who push us away, but they are the ones that usually need us
the most. Jesus never said being a disciple who makes disciples will be easy. In fact, he said that it would cost us everything. It will cost us comfort, cost us time, cost us money, but it will gain us so much more.

My prayer for our youth and for our congregation is that we would start being disciples who make disciples even in the darkest places. Jesus spent time in dark places with people no one else would touch, BE LIKE JESUS!

Two Movie Events in March

We will be hosting two movie events in the month of March at Marcus Theaters on Council (between Collins and Blairsferry, just north of Panera Bread). RSVP below!

On Saturday, March 17 at 6:30pm we will be watching I Can Only Imagine.  This movie tells the story of how MercyMe ended up writing the popular song, I Can Only Imagine. It is a powerful story of forgiveness and would be a great message for all of us.  This movie is rated PG and the cost of the tickets are $10.  Watch the trailer.

The inspiring and unknown true story behind MercyMe’s beloved, chart topping song that brings ultimate hope to so many is a gripping reminder of the power of true forgiveness.

The second movie is The Passion of The Christ.  This movie depicts the crucifixion of Jesus and came out in 2004.  We will be watching it on Sunday, March 25 at 3pm. This movie is rated R for the graphic depiction of the crucifixion and costs $5.  Watch the trailer.

The Passion of The Christ focuses on the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth’s life. The film begins in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus has gone to pray after sitting the Last Supper. Jesus must resist the temptations of Satan. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is then arrested and taken within the city walls of Jerusalem where leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy and his trial results in a condemnation to death. —Adam Ward

To rent out a theater for our group we need the number of seats by March 3. RSVP below or sign the bulletin tear-off on Sunday with the number of seats you would like. At each movie, you’ll pay cash/check to Jeremy Van Genderen at the theater door.

RSVP your family today!

Journey – February 2019 Update

In early January, I spent 10 days learning about the culture and ministry on the border of the United States and Mexico. I admit that I went on this trip with a bad attitude. I didn’t want to be away from my family for ten days, I didn’t want to just hear the political banter back and forth and I didn’t know most of the people on my trip. As always, God has a way of showing up and flipping everything upside down. Each day as we spent time in the gospel of Mark, God opened His Word to me personally and as I listened to the group. This soon became one of my favorite times during the trip, as men and women of God were speaking His truth to each other. There is power in dwelling in the word with others!

Two other thoughts that I brought back from this experience were to meet real needs instead of assumed needs, and to be content in all things. My lesson in contentment came on our third night there as we drove down a dark dirt road into a neighborhood with tin homes and no lights. We pulled up to a cinder block home and stepped out of the van into darkness. As we opened the door, the light from a few bulbs and the heat from a wood burning stove met us with warmth, but what was even warmer still were the smiles of the family inviting us into their humble home. This family of four exuded hospitality, contentment, and peace. Something that, if we are honest, is not experienced much in America. Most homes are filled with the stress of busy schedules and things to get done. This family welcomed 12 strangers into their home for a meal and fellowship.

There are so many stories I would love to share, let me know if you would like to hear more and I will try to set up a special presentation. My hope, returning from this trip, is to be more content, be more hospitable, and to know others well enough to be able to meet real needs instead of assumed needs. I welcome anyone interested in joining me on this mission, to sit down and talk.

Journey – January 2018 Update

The Journey student ministry had a busy end to the year with different service and fundraising activities. In January, keep your eyes and ears open for our annual super bowl sub sale. We would love to make some sandwiches for you for game day.

As we walk into this new year, many of us have thought of something we would like to do differently. You may have even heard the phrase, “New Year, New You.” This year I want to encourage you to live according to Ephesians 4:24. The NLT says it this way, “Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.” In Da Jesus book we read this version:
“You guys gotta start fo live da new kine way. God wen make dat new kine life so you guys can come jalike him. Den you guys goin be fo real an be good an spesho fo God, an live da true way.”

This year may your new you be molded and sculpted by the creator of the universe who knows exactly how and why he made you.

November Journey Update

Over the year of 2017, the Journey Student Ministry has watched God grow and move our youth group. To kick off the year,  we redecorated our ministry room to reflect the call God has on our ministry to reach those far from Him. Here are some numbers that show the impact God has had on us and we have had on the community.

  • Hundreds of prayer requests prayed for and answered.
  • Hundreds of friends prayed for about faith.
  • Over 50 individual gospel conversations.
  • Over 100 students attend an outreach night at SkyZone.
  • All six of our student leaders have consistently shared their faith and led testimony times.
  • Student leaders lead four outreach days in our community.
  • We’ve had most students attending Journey in the last six years.
  • Doubled our registration for the Lead The Cause Evangelism training event.

God is continuing to move in our student ministry and we are excited to see what happens in 2018!

Lead the Cause

Back in June we took 6 students and 2 adults to Lead the Cause in Chicago. During this week, our students learned to share  their faith with anyone and everyone. Since returning, our students have brought others into the ministry with them as they
walked the malls and pools of Cedar Rapids with a focus of connecting others to Jesus. Please pray for this passion and  boldness to continue and that God would start a revival in the hearts of this community. We need your help with prayer and
action. Join us as we follow the leading of God for His people!

We believe Journey Student Ministry is extremely valuable in the lives of each student and we need your help to keep reaching out to more students. If you are interested in joining the student ministry as a leader, please let me know. We are currently in need of 2 male leaders to round out our fall leadership team.
